Coaxial cable is sometimes called RF cable or RF coaxial cable.
Coaxial RF cable is the most commonly used structure. Because the
inner and outer conductors are concentric, the electromagnetic
energy is limited in the medium between the inner and outer
conductors, so it has the advantages of small attenuation, high
shielding performance, wide frequency band and stable performance.
It is usually used to transmit RF energy from 500 kHz to 18 GHz.
Coaxial cable has two concentric conductors, and the conductor and
shield share the same axis. The most common coaxial cable is
composed of copper conductor isolated by insulating material.
Outside the inner insulating material is another layer of ring
conductor and its insulator, and then the whole cable is wrapped by
PVC or Teflon sheath. Coaxial cable can be divided into 50 Ω
baseband cable and 75 Ω broadband cable. Baseband cable is divided
into thin coaxial cable and thick coaxial cable. Baseband cable is
only used for digital transmission, and the data rate can reach
10Mbps. RF coaxial cable with characteristic impedance of 50 Ω is
mainly used for baseband signal transmission, and the transmission
bandwidth is 1 ~ 20MHz. RF coaxial cable with characteristic
impedance of 75 Ω is commonly used in CATV network, so it is called
CATV cable, and the transmission bandwidth can reach 1GHz. At
present, the transmission bandwidth of CATV cable is 750MHz.
